Foundation Certificate in Staff Development

Provides individuals throughout the organisation competencies to recognise the need for training, to deliver effective learning and to deliver simple training activities.

This highly participative and practical qualification provides hands-on trainers with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to design and deliver a range of training activities in the workplace. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice and develop their skills in a supportive environment with individual feedback. The award will enable those employed in training, assessment or vocational education to gain entry into the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning as an Associate Member.

The programme will enable individuals to assemble and deliver sound, effective basic training sessions and events.  It will provide a solid foundation from which individuals may progress onto specialist trainer and learning and development professionals programmes.

Who Should Attend

No previous experience will be assumed

The qualification is aimed for

· Anyone who is required to give one to one instruction or who will deliver classroom based training sessions

· Individuals with an interest to move into training and development

· Individuals within businesses and organisations who, as part of their wider role, have a responsibility to deliver training

· Individuals within businesses and organisations who, as part of their wider role, have a responsibility to design training

· Individuals within businesses and organisations who, as part of their wider role, have a responsibility to assess training needs

· Line managers, team leaders and coaches who wish to gain more impact from development in team meetings & short training sessions

Learning Methods

This is a highly participative programme in which all learners will have the opportunity to practise key trainer skills. In addition, there will be tutor input on 'best practice' and discussion around issues which all direct trainers face.

Some study and preparation will be required between the 2 parts of the programme.

Success Criteria

The programme director must be able to verify that:

· The candidate has completed the programme

· The candidate has maintained an appropriate form of workbook or learning log that has been assessed as satisfactory by the lead tutor.

· The candidate has demonstrated training skills during the programme that have been assessed as satisfactory against specified criteria by the lead tutor.

These training skills include;

· The facilitation of learning in groups through presentation and activities,

· Giving feedback,

· Identifying individual learning needs

· Facilitating learning by demonstration

· One to one instruction.

Content

Fundamental Training Skills for Subject Matter Experts and Occasional Trainers

· How people learn

· TNA for individuals

· Task analysis

· How to write learning aims & objectives in behavioural terms

· Designing training activities

· Presentation skills

· Instructional techniques

· Group training techniques

 

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

· Identify the immediate learning needs of individuals

· Write learning aims and objectives in accordance with best practice

· Analyse tasks and design training activities to facilitate the learning of those tasks

· Instruct on a one-to-one or small group basis using appropriate demonstration and constructive feedback skills

· Facilitate a group training session which uses activities such as role play, simulation or group discussion

· Assess and evaluate immediate learning

Programme Format

This programme will be run in 2 blocks - A two day non-residential workshop followed a week later by a one day programme with assessment.

Some preparation will be required between the 2 parts of the programme.

Foundation Certificate in Coaching

Introduces supervisors and managers to the methodologies of coaching that aid in developing individual performance.

Both courses are recognised by the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning (ITOL).

 

ITOL's Certificate In Training and Occupational Learning

Provides trainers with a broader range of knowledge and skills in order to operate as a rounded professional in the workplace.  There will be further opportunities for skill development, as well as the acquisition of key models and frameworks of relevance to the professional trainer who is gaining influence in their organisation.  The Certificate will enable those employed in training, assessment or vocational education to gain entry into the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning as a Member.
